Old Church Gets a New Name
CROMWELL, CT (February 2, 2003) - Covenant Congregational Church in Cromwell has voted to change its name to Hilltop Covenant Church, Covenant News Service has learned.Affiliated with the East Coast Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Hilltop takes its name from the Hilltop Conference center, which operated in Cromwell from 1919 through 1959. "For forty years the Hilltop was a place where people from all over New England would gather for days of study and fellowship," said Pastor Tim Stohlberg. "At the Hilltop people came to deeper faith in God and made relationships that would last a lifetime. Our hope is that we would be faithful to that legacy."
The recently renamed church was founded in 1892. It moved to its present location in 1964. Since 1988 it has been the home of Hilltop Nursery School and Daycare Center. "We are excited about what our name represents," said Stohlberg. "Sometimes the best way forward is to take something good from the past."
