NPU Track-Field Teams Place Fourth in Relays
BLOOMINGTON, IL (January 20, 2003) - The North Park University (NPU) men's and women's indoor track and field teams both placed fourth at the Illinois Wesleyan University Relays last Saturday.In the men's division, NPU had 45 points as Augustana College posted a winning team point total of 145. Will Mejia had North Park's best individual performance, placing second in the weight throw and shot put respectively. Jerry Kosiba added a second place finish in the high jump and Williams, Ahkeem Waterford and Dante Britten finished 3-4-5 in the 55 meter dash. That trio and Chris Wada combined to place second in the 800 meter relay. In the 3,200 relay, Matt Wheeler, Conor Johnson, Chris Gruenewald and Paul Farnum combined to place sixth.
In women's competition, the Vikings totaled 41 points as the home school scored 125 for team honors. Lucia Able placed second in the women's long jump and Lacretia Carroll was second in the triple jump for NPU. Grace Conrad placed third in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 11:12 and Kersta Johnson was fifth in the 55 meter hurdles. In the weight events, Rachel Newhouse and Sarah Baker were fourth and fifth in the weight throw. Baker was sixth in the shot put. In the relays, NPU's 800 meter relay of Carroll, Able, Jenny Delcamp and Kersta Johnson finished third in 1:55.22. The 1,600 relay team of Carroll, Johnson, Able and Becky Gritter was fifth in 4:34.
The NPU track and field teams will compete at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invite on Saturday.
In other NPU sports action Saturday, the Vikings lost a double overtime thriller 92-91 in a men's basketball game played at Millikin University to fall to 9-5 overall and 0-4 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Sneed Deaderick had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. The Vikings host Robert Morris College of Springfield, Illinois in a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game Wednesday.
On the women's side, NPU lost 77-55 to visiting Illinois Wesleyan despite 20 points and six assists by Shandrel Young. The Vikings (5-9, 1-4) host Milwaukee School of Engineering in a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
