Basketball: Vikings Edge Past Calumet College

CHICAGO, IL (November 28, 2002) - Javier Sanchez scored a collegiate career-high of 28 points as the North Park University (NPU) men's basketball team defeated Calumet College of St. Joseph 97-89 Tuesday night in NPU's home opener.

Sanchez scored half of his points in the final 10:51 of the contest, the 6-foot-2-inch guard posting up smaller players inside and either getting fouled or making short shots. Three of his field goals in the final minutes came after assists by backup point guard Chris Edquist.

Edquist's contributions came after starting point guard Sneed Deaderick helped NPU take a 45-42 halftime lead by scoring 11 of his 15 points. The Vikings trailed 22-16 with 9:38 left in the opening half, but Deaderick scored seven points in a 3:38 span as NPU went on a 14-0 run to take the lead for good.

Damon Bruce and O.C. Burks scored 23 and 22 points respectively for the visiting Crimson Wave. But after two Bruce foul shots cut the NPU lead to 83-80 with 3:56 remaining, Larry Moore had a rebound basket and Lamar Townsend converted a turnover into a dunk to ice the game for the 2-0 Vikings, who had beaten Concordia College in River Forest last Friday on the strength of 22 points by Billy Lebeter.

The Viking men's team plays at the Ripon College Tournament this weekend, opening play Friday against Wisconsin Lutheran.

In other NPU sports action Tuesday, the women's basketball team won their first game of the year beating Benedictine College 59-45 in Lisle. Carrie Swenson scored 13 points and added 12 rebounds for the 1-2 Vikings, who had lost twice at a tourney in Kalamazoo, Michigan, last weekend. Freshmen Megan Slattery and Shandrel Young added 11 and 10 points respectively for the Vikings, who travelto Grinnell College in Iowa Saturday for a 1 p.m.contest.
