Covenant Leaders Join in Sankofa Journey

BIRMINGHAM, AL (November 13, 2002) - More than two dozen leaders from various ministry areas within the Evangelical Covenant Church traveled to Birmingham Tuesday on the first leg of a four-day Sankofa journey designed to visit historic sites associated with the Civil Rights Movement and focus on issues of racial reconciliation and racial justice.

Members of the group represent denominational offices and ministry areas as well as African-American and Hispanic associations and ministries.

Plans call for Wednesday visits to the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, site of the tragic bombing in 1963 that claimed the lives of four young girls, and the Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham. Later in the day, the group will travel to Albany, Georgia, for a visit to the Civil Rights Museum.

Thursday's itinerary includes a visit to the jail and courthouse in Smithville, Georgia, and visits to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and New Life Covenant Church. The group is scheduled to return to Chicago on Friday following a visit at the Youth Family Community Renewal center in Gary, Indiana.
