Alaskan Covenanter Named 2002 Music Educator
ANCHORAGE, AK (November 1, 2002) - The Alaska Music Educator's Association recently named Kathryn Hoffer of First Evangelical Covenant Church as the state's 2002 Music Educator of the Year.Hoffer is an orchestra teacher with the Anchorage School District and teaches at seven elementary schools. According to school district music supervisor Mike Martinson, Hoffer is a master teacher who constantly strives to improve, innovate and refine her teaching practices.
"Kathryn encourages and mentors both new and experienced teachers and is always willing to share her vast knowledge of teaching techniques, materials and methods," Martinson said. "Her students gain a love of music from her classes - many of her former students have gone on to perform and teach in our community and throughout the country."
In addition to her teaching expertise, Hoffer has been the concertmaster of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra since 1982 and a member of the orchestra since 1974. She remains an active violinist in the local music community, being the proud owner of an instrument made in Italy in 1756. She studied with George Perlman in Chicago and at the Eastman School of Music with Carroll Glenn and John Celentano. Hoffer's husband, Martin, is principal bassoonist of the Anchorage Symphony.
