South Sudanese Pastor Released

KHARTOUM, SUDAN (October 26, 2002) - Rev. Gabriel Kaek, a South Sudanese Covenant pastor arrested last week at the Ethiopian/Sudanese border, has been released, Covenant News Service has learned.

Kaek was arrested last Tuesday by a Muslim security force of Sudan in the military area called Sirea near the border of Sudan and Ethiopia. He was transferred to the Doka province on Thursday. Kaek was traveling to Ethiopia to meet with other Covenant leaders from South Sudan and Ethiopia. The border area in southeast Sudan has been a prominent Covenant ministry site and has been an effective means for many to receive food and supplies.

The Evangelical Covenant Church of South Sudan (ECCSS) was founded in 1999 and has approximately 55,000 people attending worship.
