Mercer Island (WA) Marks 50 Years of Ministry
MERCER ISLAND, WA (October 11, 2002) - Mercer Island Covenant Church (MICC)
recently celebrated its 50th anniversary as one of its previous pastors,
Robert Larson, preached at Sunday worship services.
The church's men's ministry hosted a barbecue at a nearby park following
the Sunday worship service. The previous day, the congregation held a
banquet at the Family Center of Newport Covenant Church in Bellevue.
Mercer Island Covenant Church began with the help of five families,
including two members of First Covenant Church of Seattle. They
conducted
the first worship service on May 7, 1949, in the basement of the Lester
Seed home. Later that year this group, known as the Mercer Island
Community
Sunday School, met at the Mercer Island Club House. The church was
formally
organized in 1951.
The first full-time pastor was Charles Nelson, who served from August
1952
until August 1954. In 1954, the church bought a lot and began
preparations
to build a church, holding a groundbreaking service in March 1955. The
church enlisted financial assistance through the Evangelical Covenant
Church's "Frontier Friends" (now Kingdom Builders) fundraising campaign
and
the "Fireside Chapel" held its first service in August 1956. The church
averages 555 in worship attendance under pastor Eric Newberg.
