Philip Yancey to Speak at 2003 Midwinter Conference
CHICAGO, IL (September 30, 2002) - Noted Christian author Philip Yancey is one
of
the keynote speakers for the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) 2003
Midwinter Conference at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont, February
3-7.
The theme for the Midwinter event is "In All Things Grow Into Christ."
Yancey, who serves as editor-at-large and writes a column for
Christianity Today, will highlight the closing breakfast on
February
7. The Colorado resident has written a number of books, including
Reaching for the Invisible God, What's So Amazing About Grace, The
Jesus
I Never Knew and Where Is God When It Hurts.
James Forbes Jr., senior minister at The Riverside Church in New York
City
and a nationally known preacher, will speak at the opening worship
service
on February 3. On February 4, Ruth Haley Barton, associate director for
spiritual formation at Willow Creek Community Church in Barrington, will
preach during evening worship. Haley Barton recently wrote The Truths
That Free Us and also serves as a spiritual director and retreat
leader.
On February 6, Dallas Willard, professor of philosophy for the
University
of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, will lead plenary
workshops during the morning and afternoon and then preach at the
evening
worship service. From February 4-6, Terence Fretheim will lead the 8:30
a.m. Bible studies at Midwinter. Fretheim is the Elva B. Lovell
professor
of Old Testament at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Registrants have a variety of workshops to choose from February 4 and 5.
Training for Covenant WorshipStudio will be available both afternoons.
A pre-publicity Midwinter brochure will be sent to churches in the
coming
days and more detailed registration forms will be mailed in early
November,
said Midwinter coordinator Carolyn Pietzel. General registration fees
are
$299 per registrant if fees are paid by December 16 and $335 thereafter.
Additional individuals from the same local church -
those sending registration forms at the same time as the first
registrant
from the church paying the regular rate - will pay $210 (by December 16)
and $249 (after December 16). This special rate applies only to
individuals
from local churches and not from regional
conferences or institutions.
There are also lower registration rates for pastors, staff ministers and
missionaries who are retired, including spouses, North Park Theological
Seminary (NPTS) students and interns or persons who are students at a
seminary other than NPTS and hold a current theological student license
issued by the ECC. Those in these categories will be charged $115 (by
December 16) or $155 (after December 16).
Scholarships are available and will be awarded on the basis of need,
size
of church and distance from the event. To apply, complete the
application
that will be enclosed in the pre-publicity materials and submit it to
the
appropriate regional conference superintendent or regional field
director
by November 1.
Pietzel noted that a longtime pre-Midwinter event, the YWC/CAMC
Connection,
has been rescheduled to follow the Midwinter event, from February 7 to
February 9. A Worship Connection will also be held during that time.
Pre-Midwinter events include a Faith and Health Connection February 1-2
and
a Church Planters Connection February 2-3.
For more information about the main Midwinter conference, call Pietzel
at

will
be posted on the Covenant web site as it becomes available.
