CHICAGO, IL (September 24, 2002) - The North Park University (NPU) men's and
women's cross country teams finished second in their divisions at the
Hedstrand Invitational hosted by North Park at nearby Legion Field
Saturday.
The men's team had a team total of 87 points, behind North Central
College's 20 points (low score wins) as Chris Gruenewald ran a 22:27 over
four miles to place eighth overall. Teammates Karl Hench (22:33) and Luke
Prince (22:44) were 12th and 15th respectively in the race, which was won
by Harper College's Eric Wallor (21:10).
In the women's team race, Chicago State University's Abidemi Charles was
clocked in 18:40 for 5,000 meters to win the individual title. Top Vikings
included Kari Thompson (20:14), Becky Gritter (20:36) and Grace Conrad
(20:46), who placed ninth, 13th and 14th respectively. North Park had 77
points as a team, placing behind Augustana College's team score of 20.
In other sports action Saturday, the football team beat Eureka College 27-8
(see full story on news page), but some of North Park's other teams were
not as fortunate as both the men's and women's soccer teams lost 1-0
decisions at Millikin University in Decatur and the NPU volleyball team
lost at home to Illinois Wesleyan University in a three-game match.
