Newsletters Highlight Covenant Youth Activities

CHICAGO, IL (September 23, 2002) - Children, youth and young adults throughout The Evangelical Covenant Church have been recognized for various activities and achievements, as reflected in more than 200 local church newsletters received by the Department of Communication.

Following are excerpts from those newsletters, grouped by conference or world region:

CANADA

  • Rainy River, Ontario: Evangelical Covenant Church of Rainy River teen Shauna McInerny competed for a cooperative high school team in northern Minnesota, making the Class A finals in the 200 and 400 meter races for Lake of the Woods High School.

CENTRAL

  • Crest Hill, Illinois: Booter West of Good Shepherd Evangelical Covenant Church, a college junior, recently played on a United States-sponsored baseball team that finished first in a tourney in Germany. West played third base for Blackburn College last spring, helping his team win the conference title and earn an NCAA Division III playoff berth. West also kicked for the football team last fall.
  • Naperville, Illinois: Stacy Dolan of Naperville Evangelical Covenant Church spent part of her summer ministering to street children in Romania. Dolan, a junior at North Park University in Chicago, helped lead a mountain camping trip and saw three children receive Jesus Christ as savior and Lord. She reported in a recent church newsletter, " . . . I feel that I left Romania with an entirely new perspective on things. I learned a lot about how much I depend on everyday comforts that allow me to forget how much I need God. I also saw how desperately people around the world are in need of the Lord, many for hope just to make it through the day. I was reminded Jesus ate with the sinners, reached out to the prostitute and loved the unlovely - and that is what I am called to do as a Christian. I left knowing that my time serving in the mission is not yet complete . . . "
  • Stillman Valley, Illinois: Valley Covenant Church teens Zach Amborn and April Huber were honored recently in Boy Scouts and cheerleading respectively. Amborn was awarded the Boy Scout Eagle award August 24 after completing his Eagle Scout project. He repaired and restored a lion shaped drinking fountain at Lion's Park in Lena, his hometown. Huber, a student at Byron High School, was part of a squad that won the Leadership Squad award at the Bradley University cheerleading camp this summer. Her mother, Cathy, is the cheerleading coach.

GREAT LAKES

  • Allegan, Michigan: Three youth from Christ Community Church received special honors at the conclusion of the Team Tennis Midwest Sectional championships in Indianapolis during the summer. Katie Haist won an individual sportsmanship award in the 12-and-under division. Allison Haist and Georgiann McClure were winners of the team sportsmanship award in the 14-and-under division. They are part of the Allegan tennis teams coached by Gary and Heather Ellis and Jen Aldrich.

NORTH PACIFIC

  • Olympia, Washington: Grace Community Covenant Church college student Ben Rorem won the 100 meter dash at the Northwest Conference track and field meet in May and eventually qualified for the Division III national meet in St. Paul, Minnesota.

NORTHWEST

  • Plymouth, Minnesota: Matt Bradway of Plymouth Evangelical Covenant Church was selected to represent the United States in a basketball tourney in Switzerland, competing for People to People, an organization that is affiliated with a regional basketball association.

ASIA

Jenni Husby, whose parents, David and Ronna are Covenant missionaries serving as Asia regional coordinators in the Department of World Mission, recently won a national writing contest for writing a haiku, a poem with a five-seven-five syllable count. The winning prose reads: Wrinkled old turtle/step by step she crawls through life/slow, silent, steady.
