Covenant Supports Latino Leadership Summit

ANAHEIM, CA (August 26, 2002) - The Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) Department of Church Growth and Evangelism and the Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) are among those lending support to Cumbre 2002, a national Latino Bilingual Christian Leadership Summit that will run from September 3-7.

Cumbre 2002 is a non-denominational event sponsored by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and AMEN (Alianza de Ministerios Evangélicos Nacionales). It will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center. Designed to empower and train leadership, the summit will focus on a five-year vision to aid Hispanics and their communities. Practical target goals as a result of Cumbre 2002 include establishing 500 compassion centers and recruiting 3,000 church planting pastors.

Internationally known evangelist Luis Palau is among the speakers and teachers at the event. Palau was one of the keynote evening worship session speakers at the ECC's 2001 Annual Meeting. Covenant representatives playing a part of Cumbre 2002 include Gary Walter, executive minister of the Department of Church Growth and Evangelism; David Olson, coordinator of church planting ministries in the West for Church Growth and Evangelism; Walter Contreras, coordinator of Hispanic church planting for the PSWC; Adam Edgerly, director of church planting for the PSWC, and Ed Delgado, dean and vice president of business affairs for Covenant-sponsored Centro Hispano de Estudios Teologicos (CHET).

Other notable leaders supporting Cumbre 2002 include California Gov. Gray Davis and U.S. House Rep. Edward R. Royce, who represents California's 39th District.

What makes Cumbre 2002 vital for church ministry in the United States? U.S. Census figures from 2000 indicate that the Hispanic population is growing faster than any other ethnic group in the U.S. It is the largest minority group in the U.S. (four million in all) and the fastest growing church as well. "We no longer need to travel to different countries to minister to Hispanic people - they are at our front door," Contreras noted.
