Oberlin (KS) Church to Celebrate 50 Years of Ministry

Midwest Conference Supt. Kenneth Carlson will preach at the morning worship service November 3 and a special turkey luncheon will follow. A dinner and program will be held on November 2.

Oberlin Covenant Church was started with the help of two nearby Covenant churches - Herndon and Lund Covenant churches. The first fellowship meeting was held October 28, 1952, with 21 charter members in attendance. The church joined the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1953.

Mathilda Erikson provided lay leadership in the church's early years until Clarence Swanson became the first permanent pastor in June 1954. Oberlin Covenant's first building was financed with the help of a Frontier Friends campaign. It was dedicated February 5, 1956. The current congregation, under pastor Heidi Wiebe, averages 50 in worship attendance in a town of 2,000 in northwest Kansas. During the summer, the church hosted a children's program at a city park, which has generated interest from area kids from grades two through six.
