Philippine Covenanters Reach Out to Displaced Families

PASIG CITY, PHILIPPINES (August 14, 2002) - The Jesus Evangelical Covenant Church of Pasig City has been reaching out to more than 100 families displaced by last week's fire that destroyed more than 40 houses.

The homes were situated closely together in a suburban area that is part of metropolitan Manilla, according to David and Ronna Husby, Asia regional coordinators for the Evangelical Covenant Church's Department of World Mission.

"Most (houses) had two or more families living in them," the Husby's told Covenant News Service. "Two of the families happen to be the sister and sister-in-law of one of the Pasig City church leaders, Brando Barrentes," the Husbys said. "The Pasig City Covenant Church has already started reaching out to these families by bringing food and clothing to them. They would like to do more."

Covenant World Relief has already approved emergency disaster relief funds for Pasig City, according to Jim Sundholm, Covenant World Relief director. "When disasters occur, and especially when they affect areas where Covenant ministries already are in place, we can respond very quickly," Sundholm said today. "In some situations where there are no Covenant ministries in the immediate area, we work with other ministry partners to assist us in responding to the needs of the people."
