Tourney to Raise CHIC2K3 Funds for Hispanic Students
CHICAGO, IL (August 2, 2002) - The Central Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church is sponsoring its first Covenant coed soccer tournament at North Park University on October 5 as a CHIC2K3 fundraiser for students from the conference's Hispanic churches.Stacey Greely, Central Conference CHIC liaison, said the tournament begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. It is limited to 12 teams with six players on the field at one time on a shortened soccer field. Students must be between the ages of 14 and 18 to compete in the event, which will promote CHIC2K3, the denomination's triennial high school event. CHIC2K3 will take place July 31 through August 6 next year at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee.
"The primary purpose of the tournament is to serve as a fundraiser for Hispanic students in the conference," Greely said. "In the past, CHIC has not been well known among Hispanic churches. We need to introduce the event to churches and, because of the high cost of the event, we want to help with scholarship money to make it possible for as many students as possible to attend."
Churches will register as teams at a cost of $10 per individual. There is a limit of 10 players for each church team roster. A church can send two teams if the second team is a girls squad.
Team rosters and registration money for each player on the roster will be required on the day of the tournament. Admission is $3 for those who are not playing or coaching. Churches throughout the conference are being sent information by mail, Greely added.
For more information on the tourney or to confirm team registration, call Greely at the conference office, 773-267-3060, extension 109. Greely can also be reached by email at chic2k3central@hotmail.com.
