Maryland Covenanter Honored for Service

BOWIE, MD (July 4, 2002) - Dr. William E. Tarrants of Church of the Redeemer in Bowie recently received an award for "Past President and Fellow" from the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) during an event held in Nashville, Tennessee.

Tarrants, a resident of Crownsville, has served the ASSE as a board member and as author of a professional development project that helped enact major changes in the organization's safety performance evaluation process. He is credited with more than 100 publications in professional journals and/or books. He also served on the editorial boards and as editor-in-chief of several other professional research publications.

A member of the National Safety Council's Safety and Health International Hall of Fame, Tarrants received the Distinguished Service to Safety award from that organization in 1989. He earned undergraduate and masters degrees from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and received his Ph.D. from New York University (NYU). He served as a professor at both schools during his distinguished career.

Tarrants has an extensive background in his field. Besides his professorial work, he served as a ground safety officer for the U.S. Air Force, as chief of the Division of Accident Research for the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the U.S. Department of Labor and as an analyst and director for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Along with a busy and productive vocational life, Tarrants has been a longtime member of the Church of the Redeemer choir and served as a past council chair at the church.
