Funeral Service Held for Earland I. Carlson
CRANBERRY, PA (July 4, 2002) - Earland I. Carlson, who at one time served as dean
of North Park University (then College), died June 24 in Cranberry.
The 77-year-old Carlson had been an associate professor of history and dean
at North Park from 1957 to 1962. He later became the first lay president of
Westminster College, a Presbyterian-affiliated school in Lawrence County,
Pennsylvania, serving there from 1967 to 1981.
A native of Chicago, Carlson was a veteran of World War II and the Korean
War, retiring as a major from the Air Force Reserve. He received a Ph.D. in
modern American history from the University of Illinois. He also taught and
served as an administrator at Colorado College in Colorado Springs,
Colorado, and Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. After leaving
Westminster, he headed the Pittsburgh-based McCune Foundation as its first
director.
Carlson is survived by his wife, Ethel "Lou," and his daughter, Nancy,
along with two grandchildren. Services were held in Cranberry Township,
Pennsylvania, June 30.
