Pastor's Big Catch Lands Food Pantry Big Donation
ALLEGAN, MI (June 12, 2002) - Covenant pastor Brian Haight won a fishing prize and the food pantry run by his church raised approximately $1,000 for its ministry last Saturday. An associate pastor at Christ Community Covenant Church in Allegan, Haight caught five pounds of bluegill to win first prize during the church's annual fishing tournament. For his efforts, Haight received a commemorative fish clock, as did Mark Van Order, who caught a fish that weighed eight-tenths of a pound for the largest single catch of the day.
Haight was fishing with Christ Community Covenant Senior Pastor Patrick White, but White said that Haight seemed to have all of the good fortune Saturday. Actually, the church's food pantry was the biggest beneficiary of the day. Christ Community Covenant has raised more than $2,600 for The Vine Food Pantry during the past two years. Funds are being collected this week for this year's event, but tourney director Earl Gillette said he expects more than $1,000 to be raised this year.
White is the founding pastor at Christ Community Covenant, which began in 1995. The congregation averages 250 in worship attendance in a small town located near Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. Haight recently came to Allegan after serving as a pastor at a Covenant church in Shaktoolik, Alaska.
