Foundation Interested in Dr. Paul Carlson Memorabilia

CHICAGO, IL (June 6, 2002) - The president's office of the Evangelical Covenant Church is interested in receiving a variety of materials relating to Dr. Paul Carlson, who was a Covenant medical missionary murdered by Congo rebels in 1964.

Dr. Paul Carlson A collection of donated items is being assembled as part of the reactivation of the Paul Carlson Foundation. The foundation is designed to address medical needs around the world.

Of particular interest are three publications - one book and two magazines. It is believed that large numbers of these items still exist, some in basements or attics. The hope is that individuals who no longer have a need for these materials will be willing to donate them to the foundation, which will use them in its development and promotional work.

The three desired items include the following:

  • Monganga Paul - a 200-page book written by Carlson's wife, Lois, and published by Harper & Row in 1966.
  • The December 4, 1964, issue of TIME Magazine featuring a picture of Dr. Carlson on the cover.
  • The December 4, 1964, issue of Life Magazine featuring a cover photo of Dr. Carlson greeting a group of Congolese and containing a number of photos and stories relating to the massacre of some 50 people, including Dr. Carlson, by Congo rebels.

"We are not asking people to give up copies of the books or magazines if they have a desire to hold onto them," said President Glenn Palmberg. "We are interested in receiving copies from individuals who no longer have a use for the materials and would like to see them used in new and constructive ways to help the foundation in its work. We will be most grateful for those who are able to assist us in this effort."

Donated copies of the book and magazines should be sent to the attention of Joey Ekberg in the president's office at 5101 N. Francisco Avenue, Chicago, IL, 60625. Other materials - photographs, copies of other publications that featured Dr. Carlson and his work - are also of interest, but once donated cannot be returned. Individuals desiring more information may contact Ekberg by telephone at 773-907-3301 or by email at joey.ekberg@covchurch.org.
