Newsletters Reflect Active Group of Young People

CHICAGO, IL (June 2, 2002) - Young people in local churches throughout the Evangelical Covenant Church often are recognized in local church newsletters for their varied accomplishments.

Following are examples gleaned by the Department of Communication staff from the more than 200 local church newsletters received during May.

CENTRAL

  • Naperville, Illinois: Naper ville Evangelical Covenant Church youth Sarah Specht placed first in Illinois for the Level 10 girls gymnastics all-around competition under the auspices of USA Gymnastics. She competes for the Midwest Academy of Gymnastics in nearby Warrenville. She qualified for the Region 5 championships in Dimondale, Michigan. In 2001, Specht tied for 10th in the Junior B vault competition with a score of 9.350 (on a scale of 10). She placed in the top 25 in two other individual events and finished 29th in the four-event overall results.
  • Rockford, Illinois: Broadway Covenant Church young adult Monica Bryant, a nursing major, was named to the dean's list (3.5 grade point average or better on a 4.0 scale) at North Park University in Chicago.
  • South Bend, Indiana: Evangelical Covenant Church of South Bend students Krista Bladel, Randy Workman and Cierra Strawder represented their schools at the South Bend Community School Corporation's Young Authors' Conference. Bladel wrote "Sparky Saves the Day" and Workman wrote "Bear," stories that were acted out by an improvisational troupe at the event. Only the work of 15 students was honored in such a way. At the high school level, Casey Cleaver was the bi-county wrestling tournament champion in the 125-pound weight class.

EAST COAST

  • Attleboro, Massachusetts: Children from Attleboro Covenant Church starred in "Good Kings Come in Small Packages," which was performed at the church. The event served to help youth raise money for a mission trip to Appalachia. The youth at the church have found many creative fundraising methods, including a flamingo fundraiser in March. Parishioners paid $10 each for a vote to see which family's residence would be surrounded by plastic flamingos on a random day in April. A silent auction and chicken dinner combined to raise nearly $1,900 earlier in the school year. The church had also hosted an indoor yard sale.
  • North Easton, Massachusetts: Jack Sprague of Covenant Congregational Church was nominated for the Massachusetts Prudential Spirit of Community Award for Oliver Ames High School. Sprague was recently honored for his efforts as chairman of the Oliver Ames Disaster Relief Effort, which raised $14,000 for families and victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
  • West Peabody, Massachusetts: Jenna Ward of Community Covenant Church was recently inducted into the National Honor Society. Fellow high school student Katie Woo is a dancer for her school's spring play, "Godspell," which was presented in May.
  • Lord's Valley, Pennsylvania: Church of Hemlock Farms student Suzanne Motzko was recently recognized by Wallenpaupack High School for her many honors academically. Motzko is a member of the National Honor Society and participated in Science Olympiad and Rotary Leadership Camp while playing field hockey at her school. She was also on her school's Homecoming Court last fall.
  • East Greenwich, Rhode Island: Christ Church student Spencer Blier participated in a statewide robotics contest for his high school, which took first place for engineering and design.

GREAT LAKES

  • Allegan, Michigan: Christ Community Covenant Church students Shelby Schulz, Jonathon Burns, Lacey Brabon and Betsy Fairbotham were part of the Allegan Community Players production of "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe," which was performed at the Griswold Auditorium.

MIDWEST

  • Sloan, Iowa: Jessica Koenig of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Sloan recently won a local Knights of Columbus free throw contest in the girls 11-year-old bracket.
  • Clyde, Kansas: Brantford Covenant Church youth were honored in two singing contests as Rachel Lundquist participated in a regional honor choir for an event in Manhattan, Kansas, and Allie Danielson received top honors for a vocal solo at the County Club Days, which was held at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas. Danielson, competing for the Road Runners 4-H Club in Clyde, also won top honors for a Reader's Theater presentation at County Club Days. Two weeks later, she won honors for singing and Reader's Theater at a regional event in Downs, Kansas.
  • Omaha, Nebraska: First Covenant teen Ryan George competed in the History Day competition for Elkhorn High School and finished first in the Junior Group Performance. He competed in state competition April 20. Meanwhile, Westridge Elementary School fifth grader Elizabeth Berger won the state competition in her category of "Destination Imagination," a problem-solving competition, and earned a trip to Knoxville, Tennessee, for the global competition. Two other First Covenanters, Stacia Dietrich and Bryan Jackson, were on the dean's list at North Park University.

NORTH PACIFIC

  • Olympia, Washington: Grace Covenant Church teen Nathanael Hicks placed fifth in the state's Class 2-A Mat Classic wrestling tournament at the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma, Washington. The sophomore represented Tenino High School in the 125-pound weight class. He placed second in regionals, losing to eventual state champ Aaron Sample of Elma High. His overall record was 23-9.

NORTHWEST

  • Blaine, Minnesota: Good Shepherd Covenant Church students Katrina Christensen, Erin Murphy and Stefanie Sandstrom were accepted as members of the National Honor Society at their school.
  • Dawson, Minnesota: Dawson Covenant Church teen Tanner Ulstad was elected to the Lac qui Parle Valley High National Honor Society. Dawson Boyd High School students Cole and Cade Robertson were among the Acting Up performers in a program at their high school. The event included two plays and individual acts. Three others in the Robertson family - Annette, Shawna and Gary - had duties as director, assistant and light production respectively.
  • Mankato, Minnesota: Sarah Clegg of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Mankato performed her senior recital at the Minnesota State University-Mankato campus. Clegg has played at the church for more than two years. She is finishing her degree in Piano Performance at MSU-Mankato.
  • New Brighton, Minnesota: Salem Covenant Church students Calvin Walker, Mark Halstengaard and Dan Lundgren played for coach Mark Walker's St. Anthony's Boosters boys basketball team, which won the Minnesota Youth Scholastic Association State Class AA basketball championships.
