Michigan Church to Celebrate 100th Anniversary
FOSTER CITY, MI (May 20, 2002) - Mission Covenant Church will celebrate 100 years
of ministry July 12-14. The theme of the weekend is "2000 Years of Love,
100 Years of
Praise." Central Conference Supt. Herbert M. Freedholm will preach at the
July 14 morning
service.
On July 13, the congregation will celebrate its Swedish heritage with
scripture and songs during a 5 p.m. dinner and program, according to pastor
Lloyd Nelson. The church's previous pastors will speak about their
experiences. On July 12 the congregation will enjoy a campfire and a time
of fellowship.
Originally known as the Foster City Mission Society, the church was
chartered in 1902 by 12 individuals and was reorganized in 1909 as a
Mission Covenant Church (now known as the Evangelical Covenant Church). The
first pastor at the church was J.C. Ekstrom. For more than 50
years, the church was the only Protestant congregation in the area.
The congregation averages nearly 100 in worship attendance. The church has
a strong small group ministry, including one study group that meets about
35 miles from the church. Nelson said that the Bible studies have been a
key factor in the spiritual growth of the congregation.
