Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Focus of Dialogue

CHICAGO, IL (April 24, 2002) - Former Israeli parliamentarian Shulamit Aloni and Palestinian official representative in France Leila Shahid will present "Negotiating A Just Peace in Israel and Palestine: The Tough Issues" on Monday, April 29, in Anderson Chapel on the campus of North Park University.

Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, formerly scheduled to participate in this event, is no longer able to take part in the discussion, a university spokesperson said.

The 7:30 p.m. event is free and open to the public. The sponsor for the dialogue is North Park's Center for Middle Eastern Studies.

Aloni is a teacher, lawyer and journalist. During the War of Independence, Aloni participated in the defense of Jerusalem and was taken captive by Jordanian forces in the Old City. She worked as a columnist for several newspapers and published books on political and legal subjects. She also founded the Israel Consumers Council, which she chaired for four years. Her work in the civil rights movement in Israel includes the Mapam (United Workers Party) and Shinui (Center Party).

Shahid has served as the Palestinian official representative in France since 1993. She is the only woman "ambassador" for the Palestinian Authority. Her diplomatic career includes serving as the PLO representative in Ireland in 1989, and later as the Palestinian representative in the Netherlands and Denmark. Born in Beirut in 1949, Shahid grew up with her two sisters in exile in Lebanon. After her studies in Beirut, she worked in the Palestinian refugee camps until 1974 when she began her doctorate in anthropology in Paris.
