North Park Splits Doubleheader with Augustana
MOLINE, IL (April 22, 2002) - North Park University (NPU) split a doubleheader
with Augustana College Saturday, dropping game one 13-12 and winning the
nightcap 10-7 thanks to a two-run single by Dan Gutierrez.
Gutierrez , Kevin Carroll and Dion Rubino had three hits each in game two
and freshman Greg Gober picked up the win pitching into the eighth inning
and scattering 10 hits. Ben Macaux allowed a run in the ninth but got the
save by striking out the final two Augustana hitters.
A Gutierrez RBI single and a two-run double by Tony Polumbo keyed a
five-run first inning in game two to help North Park recover from a
heartbreaking loss in the opener.
North Park led 12-10 in the top of the eighth in game one, taking advantage
of two Augustana errors. But Augustana scored three times in the bottom of
the eighth to win it, as the visiting Vikings made two errors of their own.
Jeff Hanson of Hillside Covenant Church in Walnut Creek, California, got
the loss despite striking out 11 Augustana hitters.
Rubino had a two-run homer, as did Jason Morgan, while Nick Zayas added a
three-run triple for North Park in game one. The Vikings are now 6-23, 4-10
in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play.
