Covenanter Among Marines Guarding U.S. Embassy

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL (April 3, 2002) - Private First Class Jonathan Ake of Hope Evangelical Covenant Church in Crystal Lake has been deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan, to help guard the United States Embassy.

The 19-year-old Algonquin, Illinois, resident had been training at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, before receiving his latest assignment. He joined the Marine Corps last August and received much of his training at the U.S. Marine Corps School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton near San Diego, California.

Ake was confirmed in the Evanston (Illinois) Evangelical Covenant Church and became active with Hope Covenant when his family moved to the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Parents Don and Julie (Kersten) Ake ask for prayer for their son's safety, along with his comrades both in Afghanistan and elsewhere. They also pray that their son can further his Christian witness in such a stressful situation.
