Vikings Teams Drop Pair to Elmhurst, Wesleyan
CHICAGO, IL (February 24, 2002) - Despite 19 points by Lamar Townsend, the North Park University (NPU) men's basketball team lost its final game of the season, a 92-89 heartbreaker to visiting Elmhurst College Saturday night.Sneed Deaderick, who had 15 points, helped the Vikings tie the game 75-75 by hitting a three-point shot with 27 seconds left in regulation play. But Elmhurst scored 11 straight points during overtime. NPU finished the season 11-14, 6-8 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Elmhurst finished 16-9, 9-5.
Larry Moore had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Vikings, which started four seniors: Tyler Erickson, Tyrone Hueston, Byron Pullen and Jason Collins. Collins had 13 points and finished his NPU career with 956 points and 163 3-point baskets, the second most in NPU history.
Earlier on Saturday in Chicago, the NPU women's team lost 52-46 to Illinois Wesleyan University to finish its season 8-17, 2-12 in the CCIW.
Heather Fitzgerald (16 points) and Andrea Mendyk (11 points) ended their four-year careers as Vikings players. Fitzgerald had 649 career points and 327 rebounds.
Mendyk had 1,224 career points, fourth on NPU's career scoring list. She also finished with a .763 free throw percentage to move into first in that career category. Her 192 career steals is tied for third and her 162 assists is 14th on the all-time lists at NPU.
