Peninsula Celebrates 50 Years of Ministry

REDWOOD CITY, CA (February 21, 2002) - More than 1,200 attended Sunday worship services as Paul E. Larsen, past president of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) preached at Peninsula Covenant Church during the congregation's 50th anniversary weekend February 15-17.

Larsen, the senior pastor at Peninsula Covenant before becoming president, was a special guest during the weekend. Activities began with a Friday Family Night Cavalcade of the Decades celebration attended by more than 200. On Saturday afternoon, the church hosted a "High Tea" that was attended by nearly 400. Shortly thereafter, David Howard, who previously had been organist at the church, performed using both organ and piano in a special concert. On Saturday night, a banquet attracted a majority of out-of-town guests among the 500 in attendance, according to church staff.

Peninsula Covenant Church, located in the South Bay near San Francisco, averages 890 in Sunday worship attendance. The church's first official event occurred in August 1951 as two dozen people met in the home of Carl and Millie Johanson. The congregation had also celebrated its anniversary during one weekend last fall.
