Women Vikings Edged by Carthage; Men Lose to Wheaton
KENOSHA, WI (February 20, 2002) - The North Park University (NPU) women's basketball team rallied from 12 points down, but were edged by Carthage College 62-61 Tuesday night in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) game played in Kenosha.
Down 46-34 with about 12 minutes left, the Vikings (8-16, 2-11 in the CCIW) rallied to tie the game at 61-all on two foul shots by Heather Fitzgerald with 48 seconds remaining. But Carthage center Lindsey Mangawan was fouled with four seconds left and made one of two free throws for the winning margin.
Mangawan had 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the home team while teammate Jessica Stevens had 18 points. Fitzgerald and Carrie Swenson had 11 points each for NPU, which was led in scoring by Andrea Mendyk's 18-point effort.
In men's basketball action, North Park dropped a 73-64 CCIW decision at Wheaton College despite 17 points and eight rebounds by Larry Moore. The Vikings are now 11-13, 6-7 in conference play.
