Minnesota Covenanter Part of U.S. Women's Ski Team
SALT LAKE CITY, UT (February 2, 2002) - Tasha Nelson, who grew up attending the Evangelical Covenant Church in Buffalo, Minnesota, will compete in her second Winter Olympics, recently earning a slalom skiing spot on the U.S. Women's Ski Team for the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City.
Last November, Nelson ranked 17th in the women's slalom at the Nature Valley Alpine Cup in Georgetown, Colorado, placing second among U.S. competitors. In March 2001, she placed second in the Giant Slalom during the Chevy Truck U.S. Alpine Championships at Big Mountain,
Montana.
The 27-year-old Nelson competed in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, but did not place in her event. She finished second among U.S. women in the World Championships, however.
As children, Nelson (who is from Mound, Minnesota) and U.S. Olympics teammate Kristin Koznick grew up in the same area, skiing at the Buck Hill Ski Area in nearby Burnsville. They have remained friends since then. During her childhood, Nelson got into the path of a tornado and
was blown into the air 30 feet, breaking a leg in the process. She has made a nice recovery, overcoming other knee injuries in earning two World Championships appearances.
Nelson's favorite Bible verse is Colossians 3:12: " . . . clothe yourselves with compassion, humility, gentleness and patience..." She is also featured in Sharing the Victory, the official magazine of Fellowship of Christian Athletes in an article entitled "Joy and Peace: American Alpine Skiers Keep Olympic Pageantry in Perspective."
