Carthage Defeats North Park Men; Aurora Edges Women
CHICAGO, IL (January 27, 2002) - Jason Wiertel scored 33 points and Carthage College limited North Park University (NPU) to 24 percent field goal shooting in the first half while beating the Vikings 80-62 Saturday at North Park.Carthage, ranked second in Division III men's basketball, moved to 16-1, 5-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. North Park fell to 8-8, 3-2, falling behind 39-18 at the half and never getting closer than 14 points thereafter.
Wiertel scored six points and Carthage scored the first 10 points during the opening 3:44 of the contest. After Tyrone Hueston (18 points) cut the Carthage lead to 12-5 with 13:43 left in the half, Carthage scored the next nine points and held the Vikings scoreless for a 5:03 span.
Trailing 39-18 at intermission, North Park clawed to within 14 points, 65-51, with 7:03 left as Jason Collins made two foul shots. Collins led the Vikings with 19 points.
But Wiertel and Antione McDaniel (18 points) proved unstoppable throughout and Carthage's defense throttled North Park's top scorer Maurice Vaughn. Vaughn scored just five points, 11 below his average.
In women's action in Aurora, Illinois, Amy Stoltz scored 16 points and Andrea Mendyk moved to sixth on North Park's all-time career scoring list in a 59-46 loss at Aurora University Saturday afternoon.
Mendyk had 12 points and now has 1,140 points as a Vikings player. She passed Jackie Groot (1,130) and Karen Hansen (1,131) Saturday.
