Augustana Defeats Women Vikings; Wabash Edges Men

CHICAGO, IL (January 10, 2002) - Despite 17 points by Amy Stoltz, the North Park University (NPU) women's basketball team lost 67-50 to visiting Augustana College in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) game played at North Park's gymnasium Wednesday night.

North Park (5-7, 1-3 in the CCIW) was in foul trouble most of the first half as leading rebounder Carrie Swenson sat out the final 11:58 of the half with two fouls. Still, the Vikings managed to stay close, trailing just 22-20 after a Kristen Kern basket with 3:25 left until intermission. Augustana (9-5, 3-0) scored the final 10 points of the half to take a 32-22 lead, however, and the Vikings never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Stoltz had four baskets from beyond the 3-point line in the second half. But the team's top scorer entering the game, Andrea Mendyk, managed just two points. Kern and Heather Fitzgerald added 10 points each for the Vikings, who missed 13 of their final 14 shots.

One of the three officials was Bill Orris, pastor at Deergrove Covenant Church in Palatine, Illinois.

Meanwhile in Crawfordsville, Indiana, the NPU men's team dropped an 80-77 nonleague decision to Wabash College. Sneed Deaderick and Maurice Vaughn had 18 points apiece and Larry Moore had a season-high 16 points, but the Vikings (5-6) couldn't overcome an 11-point second half deficit.

Deaderick had 13 points and North Park shot 62 percent from the field (20-of-32) to take a 47-41 halftime lead. But Wabash (6-7) broke a 61-all tie midway through the second half with 11 straight points and Joe DesJean's 22 points and 11 rebounds proved too much for the Vikings.

On Saturday, the women's team plays a 2 p.m. CCIW contest at Millikin University in Decatur and at 7 p.m. the men play Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.
