Vikings Finishes Second in Hawaii Tourney
LAIE, HAWAII (November 29, 2001) - North Park University's NCAA Division III men's basketball team finished second in the Whitworth Hawaii Invitational Tourney November 23-24, losing to Whitworth College (WA) 85-67 in the championship game after beating Menlo College (CA) 85-77 in the opener.After an 88-73 loss to Chaminade University November 26 in Honolulu, North Park returned from Hawaii with a 2-2 record.
Freshman Maurice Vaughn scored 21 points in 23 minutes to lead the Vikings offensively against Whitworth while Jason Collins added 13. North Park was out-rebounded 38-25 as post players Bryan Depew and Gunner Olsen combined for 45 points. Depew made 10-of-11 field goal attempts and had 23 points to lead all scorers.
One day earlier, Sneed Deaderick scored a North Park season high of 26 points and added eight rebounds and Collins and Vaughn totaled 16 and 12 points respectively.
Tyrone Hueston tallied 18 points in the Chaminade contest, but the Vikings were out-rebounded 43-26 and made just 6-of-28 shots from beyond the 3-point line against the Division II Silverswords.
North Park isn't scheduled to play again until December 7 in a 7 p.m. home contest against Northwestern College of Minnesota.
