Season Coming to a Close for NPU Vikings
CHICAGO, IL (November 5, 2001) - North Park University (NPU) was limited offensively to a 21-yard field goal by Jason Reynolds as Wheaton College beat the Vikings 35-3 in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) football game played at Hedstrand Field Saturday.
Wheaton (5-3 overall, 4-2 in the CCIW) scored touchdowns on its first two possessions to take
control early. North Park (2-7, 0-6) had an 18-play, 76-yard drive that began late in the first quarter, but the Vikings were stopped on the Wheaton 4-yard line and were forced to settle for the Reynolds field goal.
North Park never had a drive longer than eight plays the rest of the game as Wheaton controlled the ball with a running game that totaled 237 yards on 51 carries. Don Sanford led the Vikings offensively with 78 yards on 23 rushes and Tim Daggy intercepted a pass and contributed eight solo tackles and four assists to pace the defense.
On November 10, NPU travels to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to play CCIW foe Carthage College in a 1 p.m. contest to close out the season.
In other sports news:
- The NPU men's soccer team closed its season on a down note, dropping a 2-1 decision to CCIW visitor Millikin University Saturday. The Vikings (8-7-1, 4-2) needed a victory to clinch its first CCIW title and a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs. Instead, Wheaton wins the conference title by virtue of a 4-0 victory over Millikin (12-4-0). Wheaton and Millikin had identical 5-1 records in CCIW play.
- In volleyball, North Park finished fourth in the CCIW tourney at Millikin, losing to Augustana in the semifinals 30-28, 30-28, 26-30, 30-19 Saturday morning and dropping a 30-28, 36-38, 30-24, 30-22 decision to Illinois Wesleyan University in the third place match later that afternoon. The Vikings had upset third-seeded Carthage on October 30 to start pool play tourney action and lost to eventual CCIW tourney champ Elmhurst College Friday.
