Services Held for Two North Park Crash Victims
CHICAGO, IL (October 29, 2001) - Funeral services were scheduled today for two North Park University students killed in a single-car accident last Thursday evening.
Killed in the crash were Mark Anthony Allen of St. Charles, Illinois, and Reed G. Larson of Woodstock, Illinois. According to police reports, Allen was driving his father's vehicle when he apparently lost control of the car, which struck a utility pole.
The funeral service for 23-year-old Allen was conducted at 10 a.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church in Geneva. He is the son of Sue and Michael Allen. The service for Larson, 22, was scheduled for 3 p.m. today at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Woodstock. He is the son of Ellen and Dallas Larson. Two charter buses were scheduled to transport many of their classmates to the services.
Both young men were to have graduated next May from North Park, where Allen majored in communications and marketing and Larson studied business. Both were members of the university's Division III varsity basketball team, although Allen was forced to stop playing following a season-ending injury his sophomore year. Both were praised for their athletic abilities and leadership skills. Larson was one week shy of his 23rd birthday.
"Pretty much everybody knows everybody," said dean of students Gary Ireland of the North Park campus community. "They were both very popular, well-known students here," he was quoted as saying in a Kane County Chronicle news story.
The family of Reed Larson requested that in lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to North Park University in care of the Reed Larson Fund. Additional information will be provided at a later date.
Posters were placed in the lobby of the Magnuson Campus Center over the weekend to allow students, faculty and staff to share words of comfort and fond remembrances. The posters were to be presented to the families prior to the funeral services. Arrangements also were made to provide grief counseling to students on campus.
