Owens New SE Conference Associate Superintendent
OVIEDO, FL (October 26, 2001) - Robert Owens, pastor of New Life Covenant Church in Atlanta, Georgia, will assume duties as the associate superintendent of the Southeast Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Covenant News Service has learned.
Owens organized New Life Covenant in early 1994 - the first African-American church plant in the Covenant, according to Southeast Conference Supt. Kurt Miericke. "This was not to be an ordinary church, but a mission in a geographical area of abandoned houses, economic instability and a haven for crime," the superintendent noted. The church has since experienced dramatic growth in ministry, including two building programs.
Owens was born and raised in southern Alabama. He studied in Los Angeles and later served as pastor of Grace Covenant Church in Compton, California. It was during that time that God called him to return to the South and plant a church in Atlanta, Owens recalls.
He was elected to the Southeast Conference Executive Board in 1996 and later became the first African-American conference chair. "Robert is known and respected not only in the conference, but around the Covenant," Miericke observed. "He will bring to the Southeast Conference proven experience. He is a gifted communicator and has the ability to cross cultural barriers. He has a heart of sacrifice and a spirit of generosity."
In his new role, Owens will employ his unique gifts of urban and cross-cultural ministry that Miericke believes are vital to future ministries of the conference. "His style is very compatible to the mission of the conference," Miericke said. "Robert and I . . . have a close working relationship and respect."
Owens will begin his duties January 1 and will be based in Atlanta.
