Wisconsin Church Awarded Grant for Volunteer Program
MADISON, WI (October 23, 2001) - Arbor Covenant Church recently received a $35,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to expand a parish ministry that has been in existence for
four years.
Arbor Covenant collaborates with local hospitals and four other area churches to provide a volunteer program administered through Arbor's parish nursing program, according to Susan Corrado, who has served as the parish nurse at Arbor Covenant for three years.
Meriter Hospital directed the church to the foundation, which sponsors a Faith in Action grant program for community services that are outgrowths of church ministries. The Arbor Covenant grant does not cover parish nursing services for the church.
Corrado is seeking to develop a core group of 20 volunteers representing the five churches. The church will assess community needs in cooperation with the area senior citizens coalition and the Department of Health and Human Services in Dane County.
"We've applied for several other grants and didn't get them," said Corrado, who assists various individuals who are considered under-served in addition to her church parish nurse responsibilities. "What this Faith in Action grant has done is encourage other churches to come with us and increase the number of churches active in parish ministry," Corrado said.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, based in Princeton, New Jersey, was established in 1972 and is the largest U.S. foundation devoted to improving health and health care for all Americans. It is named after Robert Wood Johnson whose company, Johnson & Johnson, is the world's largest health and medical care products conglomerate.
