President Palmberg Nominated for a Second Term
CHICAGO, IL (October 21, 2001) - Dr. Glenn R. Palmberg has been nominated to serve a second four-year term as president of the Evangelical Covenant Church, it was announced Sunday afternoon during a meeting of the denomination's Executive Board. The unanimous decision to nominate Palmberg came during a morning meeting of the Presidential Nominating Committee, chaired by Penny Barham of Readsville, North Carolina, who also serves as chair of the Southeast Conference.
"This nomination recognizes we have a visionary leader who has been effective and faithful in his responsibilities of leading the church," said Curt Peterson, Executive Board chair, shortly after the Presidential Nominating Committee's report was presented to the Executive Board. "He has the confidence of the Covenant Ministerium and the constituency of the church," Peterson observed. "He has begun to cast a larger vision of where God is leading us."
Peterson praised Palmberg's leadership style that places great importance on developing a sense of team and empowering leaders to "move forward with passion towards the future God has for us in impacting our world."
The chair also praised the president's commitment to what Peterson described as the "gospel of grace and compassion," noting that Palmberg has "helped articulate and prioritize our ministries to break new ground, especially in ministries of compassion. He has recalled us to our deep commitment to evangelizing and reaching our lost world. I am excited about this."
Palmberg said he considers it an honor to be nominated to serve another term. "I believe that God's call is through His church," the president said. "I accept this as God's leading in my life.
"It is a joyful and rewarding experience to serve in leadership in a church that so wonderfully supports the ministries that we do together," Palmberg continued. "I gratefully accept that call."
The nomination text expresses gratefulness to God for His hand on Palmberg during his first term as president and gives thanks for what God has done in the church through Palmberg's leadership. It expresses a sense of anticipation for "great things to be done in the future."
Palmberg will stand for election during the June 2002 Annual Meeting in Keystone, Colorado. He was elected to his first term in 1998.
