Minnehaha Graduate New ELCA Presiding Bishop

CHICAGO, IL (October 19, 2001) - The Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) has a heritage stemming from relationships with the Lutheran church and that relationship continues, albeit indirectly.

Mark Hanson, the new presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), was a graduate of Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The academy is sponsored by the Northwest Conference of the ECC. He was elected at the ELCA annual meeting August 11 and installed October 6.

Hanson is the third presiding bishop over the ELCA, which has 5.1 million members and is based in Chicago. He was previously a bishop in St. Paul, Minnesota.
