Norman (OK) Church Draws 450 to First Service
NORMAN, OK (October 16, 2001) - Journey Covenant Church attracted 450 people and recorded eight first-time commitments to Christ as it began weekly services this past Sunday at Sooner Theater in Norman, according to pastor Clark Mitchell.
Journey Covenant Church had an attendance of 548 at its initial preview service on September 9 and decided to begin weekly services two months earlier than expected. Contemporary worship is a cornerstone of the new church, which hopes to reach those age 35 and under. Ministry for young families and college students will be emphasized, according to Mitchell, who noted that more than half of the 96,000 people living year-round in Norman are younger than age 33.
Mitchell (accompanying photo) was an associate pastor at Metro Church/Life Covenant Church in Edmond, Oklahoma. He worked with Life Covenant pastor Craig Groeschel for eight months before deciding to start a new church.
Sooner Theater in downtown Norman has been a temporary site for worship services. The congregation plans to worship locally in a vacant building owned by Wal-mart for the next few months, beginning in November.
