Johnston to Speak During Church and Culture Series

EUGENE, OR (October 15, 2001) - The sixth in a Church and Culture series will be presented Friday through Sunday at Valley Covenant Church in partnership with Church of the Servant King in Eugene.

The presenter is Dr. Robert Johnston, professor of Theology and Culture at Fuller Theological Seminary and a well-known Covenant speaker and writer. The series, titled "Reel Spirituality: A Christian Look at the Movies," will be presented in three sessions:

  • Friday, October 19, 7:00 p.m. - "Experiencing the Spirit through Movies"
  • Saturday, October 20, 2:00 p.m. - "Reflecting Theologically on Film"
  • Saturday, October 20, 7:00 p.m. - "The Church's Response to Hollywood"

Johnston will preach at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service. His sermon is titled "Be still and Know That I Am God."

"The Church and Culture series is a joint effort of Valley Covenant and Church of the Servant King, believing that abundant, eternal life in Christ involves loving him with one's mind as well as one's heart, soul and strength," said Valley pastor Stephen Bilynskyj, quoting from Luke 10:27. "Therefore, we seek to bring challenging Christian thinkers to the Eugene/Springfield community for a weekend of thoughtful presentation and discussion."

The first speaker in the series (October 1999) was Rodney Clapp, senior editor at Brazos Press and a former editor for Christianity Today and InterVarsityPress. He now teaches at Northern Baptist Seminary.

The second speaker (February 2000) was Dr. Stephen Fowl, a lay Episcopalian and associate professor of theology at Loyola College in Baltimore.

The third speaker (May 2000) was Dr. W. Jay Wood, associate professor of philosophy at Wheaton College.

The fourth speaker (October 2000) was Dr. Stanley Hauerwas, an internationally known Christian ethicist. Following Alasdair McIntyre, he is probably the writer most responsible for the revival of virtue ethics in Christian thought.

The fifth speaker (February 2001) was Michael Budde, associate professor of political science at DePaul University. He serves as director of the Ekklesia Project, an ecumenical group intent on helping the church take discipleship more seriously.

Sessions, to be presented at Valley Covenant, are free and open to the public. Informal discussions will follow each session and will be held at Theo's CoffeeHouse in Eugene's downtown mall.

Johnston joined the Fuller faculty in 1993, serving as Provost from 1993-1995. He previously served 11 years as dean of North Park Theological Seminary. His book Reel Spirituality was published last year. His other books include The Christian at Play, The Use of the Bible in Theology: Evangelical Options, Psalms for God's People and Evangelicals at an Impasse. He recently co-authored Life is Not Work, Work is Not Life: Simple Reminders for Finding Balance in a 24-7 World with J. Walker Smith, president of the market research firm Yankelovich Partners, Inc.

Tapes of Johnston's lectures and his sermon will be available for a fee. For more information on the tapes or the series, contact Beth Bilynskyj by telephone at 541-744-9343 or by email at bethb@valleycovenant.org.
