Patience, Sensitivity Required in Assessing Needs
CHICAGO, IL (September 30, 2001) - More than $50,000 has been received by Covenant World Relief (CWR) in the aftermath of the devastating terrorist assaults September 11.The relief arm of the Evangelical Covenant Church is continuing its work with East Coast Covenant churches to identify the most effective ways of responding to the needs of families and individuals adversely affected by this national tragedy, according to CWR Director Jim Sundholm.
"We appreciate the outpouring of sympathy and support from Covenant congregations," Sundholm said. He said he understands the high level of interest on the part of Covenanters in knowing exactly how the contributions will be used; however, he urged everyone to be patient and sensitive.
"Keep in mind that pastors are still counseling those who grieve," Sundholm said, reflecting the many conversations he has had with pastors and lay leaders during recent days. Some 6,000 individuals are considered lost in the tragedy. Pastors struggle to help families cope with the enormity of the loss, Sundholm said, noting that some are just now beginning the process of planning funerals and memorial services.
Assessing the best ways in which to assist will take time, Sundholm observed. He also believes it is important to ensure that efforts do not duplicate the assistance that other sources are providing. "We're very early in this process," Sundholm said. He said one of the support options CWR is considering is a matching funds approach in partnership with local congregations to support assistance programs they are implementing.
Additional contributions will be needed, Sundholm advised, noting the enormity of the challenge. Although major national relief programs may address some of the fundamental needs, there will be other areas requiring assistance that Covenant World Relief is best suited to address. "It's just going to take a little time - and patience," Sundholm said.
