Michigan Church to Mark 50 Years in October
TRAVERSE CITY, MI (September 29, 2001) - West Bay Covenant Church in Traverse City will
celebrate its 50th anniversary with special events October 20-21.
The church will sponsor a catered dinner at 6:30 p.m. October 20 at the First Christian Church of Traverse City, with Cherissa Purdy providing special music. On October 21, Great Lakes Conference Supt. David S. Dahlberg will attend a joint worship service at 10 a.m. and a
noon luncheon.
West Bay Covenant Church began meeting at a local schoolhouse in 1951 - known then as West Bay Mission. By 1954, the church had purchased property for a chapel and parsonage, renamed itself West Bay Covenant Church and had joined the Evangelical Covenant Church. Three years
later, the church built its current sanctuary, which had an education wing added in 1973 and was renovated in 1992.
Richard Skar has been senior pastor at the church for the past nine years and average worship attendance has increased to 125, reflecting a 20 percent growth during the past two years. The congregation is in the midst of a $50,000 debt reduction campaign with a goal of October 21 for retirement of the debt, Skar said.
