Omaha Church's Grand Opening Service a Success
OMAHA, NE (September 28, 2001) - Celebration Covenant Church attracted more than 150 people to its grand opening worship service earlier this month.
Pastor Doug Ferguson said that the congregation has been meeting regularly for worship services since last fall. The church applied for membership in the Evangelical Covenant Church in April 2000. Ferguson was a United Methodist pastor at an Omaha church before starting Celebration Covenant Church.
"We're looking intergenerational as a church," Ferguson said. "It's a broader age range than some church plants. And because of where we're located, we're getting a cultural mix, too."
The church has introduced the Alpha training program as well as a Christian Prep program, which is designed for couples to improve communication and conflict management skills. A 13-week grief counseling program has also been an integral part of the Christian education curriculum. Ferguson is a Christian counselor, having received a Master of Science degree in Counseling from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Celebration Covenant has more than 100 in average worship attendance, with 30 individuals in a recent newcomers class. During grand opening week, the church participated in the Millard Days parade and won first prize for its float. The church sent out 2,000 flyers with a refrigerator magnet and another 10,000 flyers listing "The Top 10 Reasons Why People Don't Go to Church."
