Covenant Kids Set Example in Raising Relief Funds

KINGWOOD, TX (September 28, 2001) - The terrorist attacks of September 11 shocked the world, but the generous acts of individuals and groups have given cause for hope. That spirit of hope is reflected in the actions of a group of Covenant kids in Kingwood and Chicago.

Elena Claire Lindholtz, daughter of Covenant pastor Rick Lindholtz, was among a group of a dozen Texas children who started a fundraising effort to aid victims of the national tragedy. In Chicago, four Covenant youth also were at work raising funds to help make a difference.

The 13-year-old Lindholtz and her friends raised more than $2,000 for the Red Cross, according to her father. They sold lemonade and cookies and solicited funds on their residential street. But, the story doesn't end there.

The fathers of two other children work for large corporations. Once the companies learned of the children's charitable efforts, they offered to match funds raised by the kids. That story was picked up by a local television station.

Meanwhile, a group of Chicago children also were at work in their neighborhoods raising funds for relief efforts. Ravenswood Covenant's Laura and Krista Koeller, Kelsey Hodgkinson and Anna Erickson, along with North Park Covenant's Kjirsten Johnson and Katie Hindaileh, went door to door soliciting funds for the Red Cross. Their two days of work netted more than $200, according to Carol Koeller, mother of two of the children.
