Covenanter Finishes in Miss America Top Ten
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (September 23, 2001) - Stacy Lynn Essebaggers of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Whitehall, Michigan, was among the top 10 finalists at the 81st annual Miss America Competition, which ended Saturday.
Although Miss Oregon, Katie Harman, was crowned Miss America, Essebaggers earned the respect of the other 50 contestants by performing a clogging dance routine with a severely sprained right foot that was injured in practice. The 21-year-old Essebaggers was crowned Miss Michigan in June.
A spokesperson for the American Cancer Society, Essebaggers made Breast Cancer Awareness her platform as a way to honor her mother, Cory, who is a cancer survivor. She has written a children's book and was a multi-sport athlete in high school.
Essebaggers is the daughter of Wayne and Cory Essebaggers of Whitehall. She has a brother and a sister, Brad and Shelley.
