Illinois Pastor Receives Top Civil Air Patrol Award
GLENVIEW, IL (September 20, 2001) - Dr. James H. Erickson, interim pastor at Glenview Covenant Church since October 2000, has been awarded the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Distinguished Service Medal - the highest honor bestowed by the organization.
A CAP colonel, Erickson started a new health program for the organization in 1996. The program is designed to encourage readiness, wellness and health prevention activities on the part of CAP members. He was honored "for distinguished performance and outstanding service."
A resident of Chicago, Erickson is CAP's chief medical officer as well as a staff member for the Chief of Chaplain Services. He also serves as an aerospace education officer. He served in
Vietnam as a naval medical officer and joined CAP after transferring his commission to the U.S. Public Health Service Commission Corps.
Civil Air Patrol, located at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, is an all-volunteer, all-civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force with a membership of 60,000. It performs a variety of non-combat missions for the Air Force, including search and rescue and disaster relief.
Besides his pastoral work and CAP service, Erickson teaches an anatomy course at Northeastern Illinois University and is an adjunct professor at North Park Theological Seminary, teaching in the spiritual formation program. Erickson has a Master of Pastoral Counseling degree from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland, and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Minnesota. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and completed his residency at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, serving as director of medical education.
