Covenant Pastor's Goddaughter Dies in Pentagon Air Crash

SANTA BARBARA, CA (September 17, 2001) - Kendall Dahlstrom, pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church in South Bend, Indiana, conducted the funeral service Sunday for his goddaughter, Mari-Rae Sopper, who died when her American Airlines flight slammed into the Pentagon Tuesday.

Sopper recently was appointed women's gymnastics coach at the University of California-Santa Barbara. She was an attorney with the Judge Advocate General and coached gymnastics at the U.S. Naval Academy before accepting her new position.

The 35-year-old was a graduate of Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois, where she was an all-state gymnast along with her sister, Tammy.

American Airlines Flight 77 left Dulles Airport early Tuesday morning bound for Los Angeles International Airport when it was hijacked by terrorists.
