Covenant World Relief to Aid Terrorism Victims

CHICAGO, IL (September 13, 2001) - Covenant World Relief (CWR) is working with local Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) congregations in the larger New York City metropolitan area and elsewhere to identify ways to assist individuals and families adversely affected by Tuesday's terrorist attacks.

"The far-reaching impact of these horrendous acts is difficult to fully contemplate," said Jim Sundholm, CWR director. "Opportunities for meaningful assistance undoubtedly will become clearer as we sort through all of the reports coming in and the large volume of information being assessed," Sundholm added. He and ECC President Glenn Palmberg have been working closely together to evaluate data and draft response plans.

Covenant World Relief moved into action quickly following early reports of Tuesday's disasters. "We started calling churches in the New York City area right away and continue to be in frequent contact," Sundholm said. He also has been working with World Relief International, which is meeting today to discuss the intentions of supporting partners, including the ECC.

"It is important that we carefully sort through all of the data, identify opportunities to assist and set priorities," Sundholm said. "It is also important to make certain that every penny of relief donations goes to those in need," Palmberg stressed, noting that CWR will not use any terrorism relief funds for administrative costs and will work with established relief partners to avoid organizations seeking to exploit the situation.

Calls have been received from Covenanters and others asking how individuals can provide assistance. Donations should be directed to Covenant World Relief and designated for use in the terrorism relief project. Donations may be sent to Covenant World Relief, 5101 N. Francisco Avenue, Chicago, IL, 60625.
