Covenanter Has Strong Finish in First Pro Baseball Year

HICKORY, NC (September 7, 2001) - Nathan McLouth of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Whitehall, Michigan, finished his first full season of professional baseball, hitting .285 for the Hickory (NC) Crawdads of the South Atlantic League, an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The South Atlantic is considered a top Class A level league in professional baseball. McLouth was an All-State baseball player in high school and was drafted by Pittsburgh out of high school as an outfielder. The Hickory team finished 67-73 in league action.

He was second on his Class A team in batting average, triples (5) and homers (12). He led his team in runs scored with 59 and was tops on the Crawdads with 43 walks and a .371 on-base percentage while playing in 96 games. McLouth had been in Florida for an extended spring training session before arriving in North Carolina.
