Covenanters' Parents Die in Mexico Plane Crash

REDMOND, WA (September 13, 2001) - A family attending Creekside Covenant Church in Redmond lost their parents in a Wednesday plane crash in Mexico, Covenant News Service has learned.

Chip Kennaugh's mother and stepfather (Shirley Kennaugh Genther and Chuck Genther) were among 19 passengers killed in the crash, according to pastoral staff at Creekside.

The couple was part of a University of Washington football fan cruise ship excursion en route to Key West, Florida. Plans called for the group to continue on to Miami Saturday to watch the Huskies play the University of Miami. That game, along with others around the nation, was canceled following the terrorist attacks on Tuesday.

Following cancellation of all football games, the cruise was extended. The smaller group went ashore and boarded the ill-fated flight to visit Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza. They were returning when the plane crashed 10 miles from the ruins.

The church requests prayer for Chip and his wife, Brooke, and other family members.
