Services Thursday for Carl Philip Anderson
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (August 28, 2001) - Carl Philip Anderson, past executive secretary of Covenant Publications and editor-in-chief of The Covenant Companion, died yesterday afternoon at Colonial Acres Health Care Center in Minneapolis, Covenant News Service has learned.Anderson, 84, served from 1955-70 as executive secretary of Publications as part of a 23-year ministry with the Covenant's Board of Publication. He served in church pastorates and was also involved with the Covenant's Board of Benevolence, Covenant Retirement Communities and the Office of Estate Planning Services during a 17-year period until retirement. He lived in the Twin Cities since 1981 and after retiring in 1991, he and his wife, Hazel, lived in Covenant Manor in Minneapolis. His wife died in 1999.
Born January 25, 1917, Anderson grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was a member of First Covenant Church of St. Paul before beginning his long ministry career. He attended North Park College and the University of Minnesota during his undergraduate education and served his first church, Bethany Mission Tabernacle in Stillwater, Minnesota, from 1937-39 while an intern at North Park Theological Seminary.
Anderson married Hazel Viola Swanson on November 14, 1942, while he was pastoring Hoyt Avenue Congregational Church of Staten Island, New York. He became an ordained Covenant minister in 1944 after finishing seminary degree work at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Shortly thereafter, he and Hazel moved to Chicago where Anderson pastored Edgebrook Covenant Church. He served the Evangelical Covenant Church of Lockport, Illinois, before serving as manager of Covenant Press from 1948-55.
While directing Covenant Publications, Anderson became editor of the Covenant Weekly newspaper and later The Covenant Companion and served in a variety of other communications roles before leaving Chicago in 1970. He and Hazel bought and operated a book and gift shop in Fargo, North Dakota, until 1974 when he was asked to join the staff of the Covenant's retirement community in Santa Barbara, California, now called The Samarkand. He then served in various roles with the Covenant until his retirement.
Anderson has two surviving sons, Paul and Mark. Another son, Philip, died in 2000.
