Mission Springs Constructing New Frontier Lodge
SCOTTS VALLEY, CA (August 23, 2001) - Mission Springs Christian Camps and Conference Center is building upon 75 years of service with new vigor as a new 48-bed Frontier Lodge is being constructed with unusually strong support.
The camp announced the launch of the first major capital project in over a decade during a 75th anniversary celebration worship service that was attended by more than 900 people. Since then, about half of the $1.1 million needed for the Frontier Lodge construction has been raised. Frontier
Lodge will replace a 32-bed staff house at the Mission Springs youth camp, Frontier Ranch.
Mission Springs was purchased and developed by the Covenant Sunday school and Young People's League. In 1926, the newly formed Pacific Southwest Conference (the assimilation of the Golden Gate, Central California and Southern California districts) purchased 45 acres to
become the site of its annual family conference.
Since then, the camp has grown to nearly 300 acres and serves 20,000 guests annually. This includes a summer youth ministry of 2,200 campers, a school season Outdoor Education program involving 3,000 campers and a year-round conference center retreat ministry to 14,800 campers.
This year's July Fourth celebration was part of a week-long Covenant Family Conference, a sellout event that featured the Mission Springs annual Fourth of July parade. The Grand Marshal for the parade was Vi Martinson, the oldest living Mission Springs camper at 98 (see accompanying photo). The event has long been a staple for the family conference. San Francisco music teacher and Hillside Covenant Church (Walnut Creek) member Jack Martens borrowed instruments from his school and directed a makeshift band.
